As we prepare to plant Vegetables and mulch The berry patches, we could use just a few extra volunteers to help with this process. We can be extra cautious and practice safe distancing in the garden. We would operate with only 5 to 10 people at most. The garden area is large enough for us to stay more than 6 feet apart. We would also require volunteers to wear masks/face coverings to follow health guidelines. No one should volunteer if you are feeling ill or have traveled to any hot spots. Extreme caution is highly recommended. Only volunteers in good health.

There have been many changes BHS has had to make due to the spread of COVID-19. We officially moved our families to hotels to maintain safe social distancing. This has brought many changes to the typical volunteer dinner policy. Those changes are listed down below. We really appreciate your support during these crazy times.

Location:4613 Marburg Avenue Oakley Kroger Parking Lot Cincinnati, OH 45209
  • Due to the moving families out of both of our communal style shelters of both Bond Hill and Fairmount, we are feeding more families than normal at one location. Currently, there are right around 60 guests staying at a hotel.
  • We are providing food as much as possible, but the need for food from volunteers like yourself is immense.
  • Due to social distancing, we are asking that food be separated into 16 different containers (if possible) for the 16 different families staying in each hotel room. This makes it easy for our shelter staff to drop off the items to the families easily. This could be done just using ziplock bags, plastic containers or bags, or by using old Tupperware containers.
  • Food must be brought to the Volunteer Coordinator, Gage Woolley, and he will then drop off the food to our families at the hotel. We are not revealing the location of the hotel for security purposes. To arrange a mealtime and drop off, please email Gage at [email protected].
  • Drinks are also allowed but must be in cans or something that is easily deliverable.

Social Club Peer Partner

Peer Partners are the trusted volunteers that participate in our adult social clubs. Social clubs serve as an opportunity for our adults with Down syndrome to take a leadership role in planning and implementing their own social activities. These clubs were created to empower adults and increase independence. There are numerous social clubs throughout our twelve-county radius. Each club consists of four to eight adults with Down syndrome and two peer partners. Social clubs meet regularly once a month, and the goal is to create a consistent schedule (ex: 1st Friday of the month at 7 pm). Typically, each member of the social club plans one monthly outing per year to give each member and peer partner an opportunity to ‘host’. Activities can include sporting events, bowling, dinners, art classes, grill outs, etc. Activities take place in one location to avoid "in between" transportation. Social club members pay for their own participation in an activity, while Peer Partners are reimbursed for their activity (up to $25). Peer Partners will work alongside adults with Down syndrome as they plan activities, develop social skills, manage money, explore new places, and practice healthy choices. PEER PARTNER QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Have a valid driver’s license with reliable transportation.
  3. Commit to the volunteer role for at least one year.
  4. Remain in communication with DSAGC staff throughout the year.
  5. Attend an annual training.
  6. Pass an annual background check. *Volunteers who work with those we serve without staff present are required to complete a background check and receive additional training.
